West Sonoma County Collaborative: Defensible Space Community Capacity Building.
Safer West County (a 501(c)(3)), in conjunction with Fire Safe Sonoma applied to CAL FIRE for a hazardous fuels reduction grant to reduce fire fuels in western Sonoma County. In mid 2022, SWC learned that their application had been successful!
This project will improve public safety and reduce ignitions in western Sonoma County, primarily along the Bohemian Corridor.
The primary activities in this grant are:
- Defensible space incentives to 400 households across four communities. Incentive program will target low income households.
- Educational workshops and outreach, and
- Purchase of four chippers (one at each fire department) to support ongoing maintenance of defensible space into the future.
The primary objective is to protect lives and property in Western Sonoma County and to support Sonoma County firefighters by creating a significant number of defensible spaces throughout the Bohemian Corridor so that firefighters can safely access and defend property, infrastructure, and the natural environment.
